Hobby round up 2015 week 2

Welcome to week two of our hobby round up.

First up, originally completed last week, but just too late to post, we have some Shermans, a Cromwell and a Churchill painted by Frazer.

Next up is a work in progress shot of some Dark Eldar Scourges painted by Chris. Since this photo was taken, these five have been finished off, with only their bases to do, which will be done once the next five are finished.

The final work in progress picture for this week is from Big Papa Jon. Jon who is currently residing north of the border will be returning to Bristol in the summer and has dug out some of his Mordheim Goblins. He is preparing them for our campaign which we intend to start later this year.

An last but not least, Wednesday saw games night return. Matt and Frazer played a game of Chain of Command, which they got half way through, and Elliot and Neil played 40k. Below are a few pictures of the 40k game.

What I got for Xmas

I realised that I haven't posted anything on here for ages, so here's part of my xmas present from Kim - a box of Wargames Factory's "Zombie Vixens".  I noticed that because I've mostly been converting Mantic zombies, all of my zombies have been male, and mostly bald-headed, except Murgatroyd (who has been added to one picturein order to show how they scale with the rest of my collection), so these gals will add a bit of much-needed variety.

Apologies if the pics look a bit odd - I've been tinkering with aperture settings and shutter speed on the camera to try and get some nicer snaps.  Still in the experimental stages with that.  Anyhoo, here goes:

This final guy is a fatty from the Zombicide board game.  Couldn't resist adding him to the zombie parade.

Since finishing these guys, my hobby painting has dropped to pretty much the usual levels - priming and promising to paint.  So it'll probably be a while before I post anything further,  although I did finish off the base of the zombie in the red dress since taking these photos.  This brings my current total of completed zombies to 16.  Hopefully, once I find some suitable survivors, I'll be rounding the horde up to it's first landmark total of 20 painted models.  Then I'll start working my way though the unfinished zombie model mountain I've accumulated.

Hello Big Papa

Once again its that time, so please say hello to Big Papa

1: How and when did you start wargaming?

Actual gaming would have kicked off for me around 1989/1990 with a few games of rogue trader era 40k against my a couple of my friends from school.  Collecting/painting models started back in 1987 with grandiose ideas of using models in D&D games that never came to fruition.  I remember someone brought a couple of minis into school, and they really captured my imagination.  Twenty-five years on, I still find myself mesmerised by nice new models.

All Your Bases Are Belong To Us Now

My Saga rules and box of Conquest Games Norman Knights arrived, so I've been assembling the start of my warband.

So far, I have completed:

4 Milites (Hearthguard)

2 Pueri (Warriors)

...And my warlord, Reynard du Ponce (He'll have a servant or two added to his base before I finish)

There are a few more Milites to go, but now I'm just waiting on the release of Conquest's plastic Norman infantry, and I'll be ready to invade!

Jezzails for the frugally inclined

I know it's been a while since I raised my head above the parapet, but the guys up here don't play WHFB or 40K, so things have been a bit lax on that front, and army building has kind of dropped off as a result.  Got some nice 10/15mm skirmish forces done, though :)

But, figuring that it would be nice to do some work on a GW model or two, I found an interesting conversion on underempire.net that got my attention.  Someone had given plastic Clanrats Kroot arms to make Jezzails. Looked okay, if you can accept the long arms and bird-claw hands.

I couldn't accept that, but the left arm was a P.I.T.A.  Still not sure if it looks right...

Biggest of the big hats

Just put the finishing touches to the first model for month one of the "Tale of multiple gamers". Here's my general. Although a lowly Thane right now, I don't really want the hassle of making a new general when the army is expanded beyond 1000pts, so I've made quite an extensive conversion. It reached the point where he was in danger of bling overdose, so the idea of having him carried into battle on a platform carried by slaves has been abandoned. For now.....

This model also marks the start of my experiments with GF9 "Grey Stuff". First impressions are favourable. It dries harder than Green Stuff, and can be cut or filed nicely when dry. The main differences are that the working time is much shorter than Green Stuff, making it less suitable for detail work, and it does not have the same sort of elasticity. But it is definitely well recommended.

Anyway, without further ado, here's a close up picture:

And a before and after picture, showing the BFSP Thane that he is based on.

The only question now is whether he will fit in a unit considering all the additional bulk he has been given. Still, that's a worry for another day. The Death Rocket and crew are next on the list...

The Slave Pens Open

Well, My first £25 has been spent. £10.50 on the Dwarf army book, and £14.00 on a BFSP Dwarf army, both courtesy of Ebay.

Since the start of our Tale of X Gamers is imminent, here's my first draft of an army list, and my efforts so far. I may reduce the size of the units to get more variety into the army, but you get the gist.

I'm feeling a bit worried that my entire army could be purchased over two months, but, that said, my entire army will need to be extensively converted, so I guess that the budget can be spent on fancy knick-knacks for conversions, or I could just be grateful fo rthe extra time for modelling/painting.

The army list so far is:

1 Tyrant (Thane) with Gromril armour & Shield, carrying a rune axe bearing the Rune of Dominion (Master Rune of Snorri Spanglehelm) and the Rune of Torment (Rune of Cleaving) - 112 points

20 Warriors with hand weapons and shields with full command - 205 points

20 Immortals (Longbeards) with shields and great weapons with full command - 325 points

1 Death Rocket (Organ gun) - 120 points

15 Blunderbussers (Thunderers) with full command - 235 points

The units seem a bit big and pricey, but I'm kind of relying on them being able to take a head-on charge and still dish it out in combat.

Anyway, most of my models are currently without headgear, but just to prove I'm not slacking, here's my Blunderbuss Champion, and a couple of Death Rocket concepts (all in need of a little tidying up).

True Scale Tribulations

After my recent visit to see the gang in Bristol last week, there was some interest in my attempts at true scale marines, using plastic terminator legs. Here's my first attempt, a Scythes of the Emperor Captain. The legs are, of course, from a plastic terminator, with a bionic leg made from a necron leg. The knee is actually a plastic marine elbow.

Not overly difficult to do, just remember to make the back of the belt more chunky with green stuff.

Cheers,

Big Papa
