Where We Work

The majority of the Lone Wolves are active modellers and painters, and this is where the magic happens.

First up, Big Papa's work desk. He is currently sculpting Marian Romans and 15mm Skaven, whilst converting some Night Goblins and painting a Wood Elf Bloodbowl team.

 

Next is Frazers bureau with paints all racked up. A range of projects on the go including 15mm tanks, 10mm Dropzone infantry and what appears to be some chickens(?) and other livestock.

 

 

Elliot is next with his bureau (we're posh we are!) This one is a little sparse, but if you look closely you can see some Putrid Blight Knights and some Kroot.

 

Matts paint station is next. No idea what is currently being done on this as it appears to be stored out of the way out of reach.

 

Neil's paint table is next, and what can you say about it?! The streams of light highlight the wonder of organised chaos, with a multitude of projects on the go at the same time; everything from WW2 tanks to Ogres to Orks...

 

Another sparse table for Simon, with a handful of Crimson Fist Terminators and a Marauder Giant the most noticeable projects. The second appearance of a computer sharing the desk; could this be a distraction?

 

Finally is Chris's paint station, stored away when not in use, and currently on the dining table. Currently in progress are some Dark Eldar Scourges and a large collection of Night Goblins.

Preparing for Battlegroup Kursk

Myself, Dave and Lordy have the new Battlegroup Kursk (BGK) book and a wonderful rule set it appears to be.  I say appears because we have not yet played a game.  Lordy and I were set for Clash of Reconnaissance last Wednesday but a family priority delayed our opening game.  Next week hopefully.  It has allowed us a little more time to work on our Battlegroups.  Why the delay when rules came out in October and so many people across the globe had to wait a number of weeks to get their copy?  We decided that with a significant commitment in 15mm Flames of War (FoW) figures and generous amount of in scale scenery and terrain that it made economic sense to reuse these figures rather than go to 20mm; tempting as it was.

However, it wasn't as quick or as economical as expected.  A decision to use some spare 15mm figures and to base them, more appropriately, for BGK was sensible.  We could have used wound dice or counters but my habit of 'clearing' the battlefield to keep it aesthetically pleasing has caused issues in the past.  Then a few extra tanks were needed; unfortunately our preparation coincided with a trip to the Warfare show at Reading and all the Plastic Soldier Company (PSC) deals mean I now have enough tanks for North Africa as well as the Eastern front and my painting queue has once again increased. 

Lordy finally realised that his ever so cheap Gamodls T70's weren't actually what he desired in a miniature tank and replaced them with newly released and ever so splendid PSC version and topped up his T34 strength.  I think he has plans to replace his KV 1's in a similar manner. 

I did manage to keep the spending at a more respectable level by purchasing Zvezda Sd Kfz 222's rather that go for more expensive versions.  The snap together kit needed a bit of glue and some swearing but for £2.50 vehicle it is worth it.

So where is the pay off, the punchline to this post?  There isn't one yet.  Just a picture of some progress I have made on my vehicles.  The camouflage is done, next will be the pin washes, the decals and then the weathering.  I am undecided if I should 'chip' at this scale.

I would just like to say for the record,  for a change it was not me that 'encouraged' someone into a new set of rules but Lordy himself.  Just sayin'.

Laager

I have not mistyped, this is not a fizzy alcoholic drink.  If you want to know a Laager is a defensive encampment encircled by armored vehicles or wagons.

I have struggled to get any good images of anything I have being doing or completed of late.  Not that I have completed much in truth but I thought I would just take a snap of my paint station.  I am about half way with my Battle Group Kursk force.  I discounted starting 20mm because "I don't want to start from scratch, I'll just use my Flames of War stuff and tweak it a bit"  I honestly believed it at the time.  Anyway the PSC tanks are joy to put together, the Zvezda armoured cars not so much.

Encouraged by the success of finishing the MMG team for the platoon, I have base coated the remaining Paratroopers. Once I have the Bolt Action rules I will decide what else I want to add for platoon support.

Valkyrie - Work in Progress - Paintstation view

With the new edition of 40k now available all attention and efforts swivel to the grim future where there is only war and haberdashery; it will never die.  These two flaming comets of death have been half done for longer than I can remember.  I have an upgunned Valk standing in for a Vengence that is not far behind.  The weapons and decals to do and they should be ready for their first sortie.

*Edit* How I painted these so far

I used a black undercoat although I wish I had used grey.  I then used an airbrush to layer up GW Desert Yellow over the black; the thinned paint took several layers to get good coverage but it does allow for  emphsis on some panels as needed.  The engines and skids etc were painted with bolt gun . metal with a dash of extra black. Followed by a dark wash.  I then used MIG neutral tone around all the rivets and panel joins.  When dry I used charadon granite and a sponge to weather up the leading edges of the wings and areas of high wear.

Well it's yet another wonderful May day bank holiday.......rain, rain and more rain. So more time for hobbies....

Seeing as everyone seems to be showing there painting area I thought I'd join the club and post a picture of mine too.

Simple with loads of space.......to much space sometimes.

Right well that is all, I'm off to start some more painting and get ready for another day off tomorrow as it's my birthday....will I get any new toys....highly unlikely seeing as the wife thinks I have more than enough......

All Ahead Slow...

I have read Dave Taylor's advice for getting plenty of hobby in when confronted with other more important demands on your time, family and work really, it's not as easy as it sounds

Despite a busy weekend I have got the Stug's to the shiny stage; using thinned oil paint to bring out the definition. When the decals are applied I will spray it with Matt, the varnish.

It has also taken me all day to build an AA truck. 3.7cm, never mind the quality feel the width! My youngest, Dougal, can move the steps and climb to my paint station despite being only 18 months. We've had two games of hunt the tracks today. Two more to go.

In other news I have undercoated the 15mm Church but it's not worth looking at yet.

New Years Day

For me the holiday period is no longer a concentrated period of painting, modelling and larger scenery projects, my children take more of my time and in particular my eldest son wants me to play with him from the moment he wakes until the moment he goes to bed and sometimes in the wee small hours too.  I'm not complaining, far from it I enjoy it but my painting is now 'drive by' only and is at the mercy of my wife putting up with it being in the kitchen for weeks at a time.  Anyway you can see the bits I have been fiddling about with; I should have concentrated on finishing something but that's not my style...!

Giant

It's been half done for about 3 years; I didn't have an army to put it in, but apart from a touch of static grass my giant is done and will be found in my Warriors of Chaos army also only half done.  It will then be found on a battlefield studded with arrows or with a stove in chest.  T5 tsk tsk who writes these army books?

Tau and Templars

Binx and I have finished the current crop of Tau, 3 hammer head and a skyray turret along with 37 assorted firewarriors and pathfinders - dipped ;o). 

Also finished are 10 Templars scouts, neophytes, human shield or whatever you prefer to call them

Chaos Marine Chosen are done, 16 days behind schedule, now onto the Terminators, hopefully done by the end of the month (although im sure they will run into November)

After them just a Landraider and a Keeper of Secrets to do and thats 3700pts painted.

Rather than a picture of just my completed unit I thought Id show my paint station instead.

Some progress, not as much as I would like, all the WoC figures I have are now base coated and if you look carefully I have 4 test figures finished.

All I need now is Cortez to finish off his debt and provide me with the marauders I need....

Not much action on the Blog recently so I thought that a quick snap of my WiP would have to do for the moment.  The stroll by painting is back up and running and the occassional 10 mins of brush time I can grab as I walk past adds up over a week.
