Tuesday Hobby: Size isnt everything

Big Papa didn't  have anything new to show this week, since he's been decorating his Mum's front room, but did his in progress 15mm WIP Warhammer Empire.  Its one of those projects that he keeps"nibbling" at when  he gets some spare time.
All based for Kings of war (with dice frames for keeping track of wounds), and painted in ye olde warhammer style, with units being raised from several different city-states.  Here's what he used:
Humans are all from Essex Miniatures, with a few heads/hats from Black Hat and Museum Miniatures.
Ogres are an amalgam of Avatars of War Dwarf Slayers, GW Orc heads, Empire plastic hats, and a bit of green stuff.
The war wagon/siege tower is scratch built (mainly from spare plastic bases and card) with a few gubbins from the bits box, and horses from Black Hat.  Still a ways to go before I finish, but in my defence, cutting tiny strips of tiles, sorry - armour plates - from card and sculpting lion faces with leftover green stuff gets boring very quickly.

Hobby Round up Week 16

Welcome one and all! A quiet one this week.

Neil has been busy out in the sun taking ropey pictures of his offerings.

First of all we have a some Soviet armour, which I'm sure Matt will be looking forward to facing in their upcoming game of Chain of Command

Neil has also been testing some colours on his Trolls. He picked up a load cheap off eBay a while back and has finally got his brush to them. If you squint a bit and tilt your head, you may be able to make out what he's done!

Chris has continued to chip away at some Drop Zone Commander for Dave. The walkers and tanks are done and the Drop Ships have their base coat of green done. Still quite a bit to do to these, and some infantry bases to follow.

See you next week, after some of us return from Salute

Hobby Round up Week 11

Happy Mothers day!

Not a great deal of hobby to report this week.

First up, Neil has continued to plough through some Avatars of War 'Nurgle Warriors'. Having built them last week, now they have a white undercoat and in some cases a myriad of different inks

Simon continues to beaver away on his Space Wolves. His Terminator squad now has a few more colours on them.

Finally for this week we have Frazer's efforts. He continues to plough through the large amount of Dark Elf Witches he owns, but inches ever closer to bringing them to a Wednesday game.

Frazer has also continued to work on some Lonewolf Terminators....

... and whilst hunting through the garage, unearthed some of his Chaos Marine collection that will be hitting eBay soon.

Hobby Round up Week 10

Welcome to another visual feast of hobby updates!

First up we have some Wolf Guard from Frazer. Many years ago, we created a squad of Space Wolves converted to look like members of the club. Back then we were all in power armour, but now after taking part in many battles, the most decorated of us are being immortalised in Tactical Dreadnought Armour.

First up are Si, Neil and Dave.

Next from Frazer's work in progress pile is some Dropzone Commander vehicles that he is painting for Dave. As you can see they are resplendent in an urban camo scheme

Simon is next and contrary to the photos he is not a hobby vampire, just appears to prefer taking photos in the dark!

First we have some more Space Wolves, this time for his personal force.

Simon is our resident Bob the Builder, helping out those of the club who are unable to or prefer not to build their own figures.

This week he has been helping out Next Door Matt by constructing his Forge Fiend. He has gone the who hog by magnetising the head and weapons.

Neil, with a bit more time on his hands at the moment, has been working on some Avatars of War Corrupters, which are lovely models but a beast to glue together.

He has done a test scheme on one of them, using a white undercoat and a selection of different inks. For the observant of you, no that isn't the original head, but in fact a Heresy miniatures Blight head.

Oh and he also drew a face on a sqush... say hello to Sidney...

Finally this week, Chris has finished his first 10 Martians from Mantic Game's Mars Attacks game. He will go back to some of the bases in the future and add some trash, with ideas of how to do discarded fizzy pop cans top of his agenda.

Frazer & Simon Dark Elf and Space Wolf Work in Progress

Si has been working on his Space Wolves over the last weeks and his painting is really coming along, unlike his photography.  The underwhelming picture disguises an other wise talented painter!

I have been giving some love to the less than lovely Dark Elf Witches.  I returned to them after nearly a year of being nearly finished.  When I examined them they were far from finished and not as good as I remembered.  So I have repainted some parts of them and have tried to get a good table standard for these dirty ladies.  With my New Year's resolution of only playing with fully painted figures they won't be making it to the table this week.

Games Night

This weeks games night was a two game affair with me and Elliot playing 40k, and Neil, NDM and Simon playing Warhammer Fantasy.

The majority of the of the photos are from the 40k game as that's what I was playing.

My 1500 points of Necrons. This marked their first time out since the release of the new Codex

Elliot deployed his Blood Angels first, spread thinly across the battlefield

The Death company decided not to charge, then the following turn failed their charge, and eventually jumped in!

Three Wraiths vs a Tactical squad. This combat went on for 3 turns, with the Tactical Marines eventually victorious
After wiping out the Wraiths, the Tactical Marines got ready for the Flayed Ones who went on to roll snake eyes for their charge!
After a fast start and a 9-3 victory point lead after four turns, the Blood Angels managed to turn things around and with a point for Line Breaker secured a hard fought draw.

Neil (aided by Next Door Matt) and Simon played Battle for the Pass.

Neil's Empire face off against Simon's Warriors of Chaos

The 'Welsh' Demigryphs get ready to charge the 'English' Chaos
This game also turned out to be a close one with Simon riding the disappointments of slow moving vortexes and the triumphs of the Hellfire Sword.
With Simon heading for a famous victory, his magic item of choice showed its fickle side, killing his Chaos Lord and thus ending the game in a draw.

Hobby Updates

Its been a quiet week on the hobby front for the Lone Wolves, mainly as everyone is currently concentrating on their £5 Challenge figure, more of that on Tuesday.

First up Simon has been building some Wood Elves for Frazer, and some Space Wolves, if you look carefully in the background.

Frazer on the other hand has almost finished his big batch of Chaos Warriors, just the bases to go. Unsure which Chaos power to align himself to, he has covered all bases, and the prominent power will take up position in the front rank during games.

And whilst not painting Chaos, he has begun his next project for Matt, some British Moderns, which made their debut on the table during last Wednesday's games night

Wednesday War - Warhammer Fantasy & Warhammer 40k

This week there were two games the first was Warhammer 40k with Dark Eldar raiders being brought to battle by a Space Wolf war party.  The second game is Warhammer Fantasy Battle with the Skaven  breakthrough a an Empire mountain pass.

Warpstone Treason and Plot

Warlord Baz Skitterflemm marched at the head of his of Clan Pestilens warband, his target deep in an unguarded pass in the Black Mountains a long abandoned Dwarf keep filled with lost treasures.  But as is common in the cutthroat existence of the Skaven Baz has been deceived and the pass is under regular patrol by an Empire muster.  Too late to withdraw the two races clash in a bitter fight to the death.

The ratmen extend into a battle line ready to crush the man-things with overwhelming numbers.

The Knights and Demigryphs patrolling the valley sides ready to sweep down into the ratmen horde
The Empire spread across the valley floor to prevent the Skaven passage.

The a stink of Warpstone drifts across the valley as insane contraptions are powered up.

The madness of the hell is released towards the Empire lines the near mindless creature ignores the flights of crossbow bolts and shambles towards its foe and dies before it can reach them

Lightning quick the Skaven hit the halberdiers the Empire General is flustered and his attacks are poorly directed and lacking in power but the press of men holds the rats at bay.  Now all the Skaven champion needs is for his kin to strike and victory is his

The Plague catapults and magic start to fly and the brightly coloured spearmen are struck down in their tens.  The Volley gun fires, then splutters then goes out.  The crew frantically unload all the barrels and set about replacing the faulty charges.  Magic saves the day smashing the doomwheel.

The Skaven Champion presses on certain that support will be with him at any time.  The Greatswords hemmed in by the cliff face change formation and ready themselves to hit the Skaven in the rear

As the knights race ahead to deal with the Skaven war machines the Demigryphs led by the Warrior Priest charge down the valley side into the unsuspecting Skaven warriors who are struck down for no loss to the Empire

Chopping down the fleeing Skaven the Storm vermin suffer the same fate
The unstoppable Empire Elite push on towards the idol.  Warlord Baz Skitterflem orders his unit around in time to face the monstrous cavalry

The irresistible force of the Demigryphs destroy the immovable object of the plague furnace and Warlord Baz Skitterflemm’s two year reign is at an end

My Pretty Slave!

Dark Eldar Raidercraft slide through the ruins looking for imperial citizens to enslave or to torture to death

But this is a nothing more than a trap and Wolf Riders of Fenris spur their mounts to bring the enemies of the imperium to battle

As the Dark Eldar slow their vehicles to search for victims the trap is sprung as Wolfguard arrive by teleporter.  The Wolf plan is to pin the enemy forces in place until the main force arrives to crush them

Realising his mistake the dark eldar lord orders his raiders forward to destroy the terminators and then make good their escape before more armoured warriors arrive.

High velocity shards patter off the grey armour with little effect whilst bolts shatter the Dark Eldar in return but it in the close quarters of combat where the lighting quick reflexes and poisons will make the enemy pay

The wolves are ferocious and hard to kill and destroy the elite of the Dirty Eldar

Both sides commit reserves in an effort to swing the battle to their advantage

The quick hit and run having failed the Dark Eldar Lord orders a raider to out flank the Wolves and attack them from behind hoping to catch them in a trap of his own.

Further back the Grey Hunters disembark to deal with the threat to their rear.  Flamers and Boltguns sweep the ruins and the alien counter attack falters before it has time to make any difference to the Space Wolf plan

Unit after unit are thrown at the Wolfguard and Wolf Riders and finally they manage to bring down some of their enemy but it isn’t enough and the Dark Eldar Lord signals the withdrawal.

The Space Wolves have stopped this raid but the cost was far higher than expected

Last turn draw!
