Random Musings...Stealth Purchase

We've all done it I'm sure; bought something that we think we won't tell our wife/partner/significant other about just to avoid "that conversation".
If you don't know what "that conversation" is then I envy you!
You just need to get your new item into your gaming/storage/painting area and it will be absorbed into the rest, no questions asked.
If you're spotted then it will be endless questions on why you need more toy soldiers rather than putting money into the holiday fund/electric meter/shopping money/apocalypse shelter budget.
You just don't need the hassle, right?

A lot of the time the postie will deliver items ordered when you're at work and kindly leaves a bright red "look, he's ordered stuff again" card for you to pick up your loot from the post office. The card alone will set up the round of questions and then when you come back from the post office with the parcel it all starts again! Nightmare.

Imagine my joy a few months back when I was the first one home and discovered one of these accussational cards on the door mat. I quickly picked it up and stuffed it into my pocket. I could go to the post office before work in the morning, pick up the parcel and sneak it into the house later! Hassle avoided! Sweet.
So arriving home the next evening I had stashed my shiny new box of Soviet anti tank guns (not even a particularly big purchase) into my laptop bag and carried it into the house, placing it in the usual spot.
We're in!
Just having the usual "Hello, I'm home" type conversation when I heard behind me;
"wass 'is?" from the boy.
I turn as the wife says "yes, what is that?"
The boy often likes to fiddle with the zips on my laptop bag, one in particular is red and appealing. This is the one that closed the pocket where I had stashed my ATGs.
Dylan was now waving this box around like his favourite rattle!
Rumbled!
Thanks, Son!

Anyone else got a stealth purchase story?

Random Musings.... and a poll!

I've not randomly mused for a while so why not squeeze one out!

The upcoming new edition of 40K has got me musing over editions of games past and present.
Having been knocking about the hobby for longer than is sensible I've seen a fair few editions come and go.
But is newest always the best?
The poll (see right) is for fantasy battle as I'll wait til the new 40K has been out a few months before checking on that one.

Fantasy has been/is my favourite GW game and I started with 2nd Ed. I then played an awful lot of 3rd (level 25 heroes anyone?) with solid units of troops making their presence felt which is what I think the game should be about.
4th passed me by as I was in Uni and drinking far too much booze to play games.
5th I hated due to the "herohammer" nature of the game and actually refused to play it (tricky as I was working for GW at the time!) for years, sticking to 40K and the specialist ranges.
Then came 6th which was a breath of fresh air! Units of troops were worth taking again!
7th and the herohammer was creeping back into the army books but still much fun.
8th (current) edition was a big upheaval but on the whole seemed a good move. Big units of troops are back in thanks to steadfast and horde rules. However the later army books seem to be bringing a "big thing" for each race to the game and upping the "monsterhammer" level with an element of "herohammer" (hellheart, chaos puppet, anyone?). Still enjoying the rules but this needs keeping an eye on!

So whats your favourite edition of the game? And is change always for best?

Poll to the right, comment below!

Random musings: Suicidal Tendencies

One of my favourite old bands (ST for life!) but also a new tactic for low level wizards?
This article brought it to my mind:
It's not just our group that's noticed it. I've seen Binx and Tomarse use this to some effect (plague furnace into a big hole!) and I'll be honest I'm not sure I'm keen! Seems a bit gamey?
However its going to be a feature of 8th Edition and I'm also not saying I'll never try something similar!
Views?

Random Musings: Frenzy in 8th

Just spotted that if you're frenzied you don't get to use the 6+ ward save "parry".
Go check it out on P88.
It goes on to imply Dizzee Rascal wouldn't get the parry save either.......

Random Musings: Choosing spells

8th Ed magic.

We have the new battle magic deck o cards - cool! But check this (out of context!) snippet from a random blog:

Keep in mind, you still need to ROLL for your spells. The Master Manipulator (every store needs one) pointed this out to me in our game yesterday... remember, you can choose the spell you want if you roll doubles, so don't deprive yourself of the chance by drawing cards from the deck!

Grabbed from here: http://strictlyaverage.blogspot.com/2010/07/review-warhammer-templates-and-tools.html

Wouldn't have spotted that myself but well worth noting! Lets see who doesn't read the blog and picks their spells via the cards!

Random Musings: WFB 8th Ed

Soooo I've been looking at some of the (confirmed) rumours for the new edition of warhammer and whilst on the whole I'm waiting to see the finished product for myself I thought I'd pick up on a small point that's changed - army selection.

Its going back to a percentage system.
25% max lords (includes mounts)
25% max heroes
25% MIN core
50% max special
25% max rare

Good thing? Bad thing? I really don't know at this stage but one thing that occured to me is most armies could easily fit 2 lords into a 2000 pt army.
You could get a LOT of goblin lords for 500pts!
