Going Berserk!

All this Dark Age action with Saga knocking about got me looking at my Vikings again.
I'm not planning on starting the Viking army until I finish my Celts  (soon?!) but couldn't resist having a go at some models, dipping of course!

They may see action in Saga in the meantime but with a few other Viking warbands on the prowl they may get used as Jomsvikings to be a bit different. Thats only if I fancy a change from the Welsh of course!

First up, berserkers. These boys sit in the viking units until the enemy get close and they can contain themselves no more

and a unit of Ulfhednar. They play differently to berserkers in WAB (more of a skirmish unit) but I'd probably use these models as berserkers in Saga

The "C" word!

After several months of playing Imperial Guard, many unpainted and with an Apocalypse game looming I've done the only sensible thing.
Thats right, painted some Celts!
I've had a blister pack of Warlord Games nekked fanatics (Binx's favourite!) kicking about for ages and wanted to get the Celt project moving again, as they're mostly just skin and woad I thought I could do them pretty quickly.
I was right! Good old dip!

That brings the new Celt total points to 813 points, so close to the 1000pt target!

Charge of the Light (Chariot) Brigade!

Right then, I ended my last Celt update with the question:

What next? Chariots or another unit of foot warriors?

Hands up who guessed chariots?

Smart arse!

I went with the chariots for a number of reasons namely when you think of Celt armies you think of loads of blue painted, frothing warriors backed up with thundering chariots, right? Based on that it seemed the right option.

That and they'd be easier to get done quickly!

I actually brushed the dip on these fellas and it may be something I do for the future as it was easier to control where the dip/shading went and prevented too much pooling though it possibly ends up a little too light in places. Something to review though definitely.

This brings the Celt running total up to a mighty 741 points!

Now to get on with that unit of warriors.....

Woad-A-Ley-Ee-Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Hey! Remember the Celtic army I was working on?
No!?
Oh...... I know its been a while but....*sigh*.....
Anyway getting a little bored of blue and white for Elves I've taken a slight divergence and finished off a lot of Celtic stuff that's been hanging around the painting table for a while now!

First up a unit of 10 Celtic horseman. I've been jabbing random colours at these for what seems like (bronze!) ages so I decided to just get them finished.
For the amount of effort put in (not that much really, a bit like the English rugby team) they've come out quite well!





Next we have another character, the army standard bearer. Always a big fan of army standards as they keep the lads fighting just that little bit longer (well, hopefully!).
This fella was painted "normally" rather than dipped.



Finally its the start of my fanatic unit, otherwise known as crazy nekked dudes!
The one in the middle is a Warlord games Druid but as I have 3 other druid models (and you only get 1 per army!) I thought he'd be better off as a leader for the fanatic unit.
The other models are Foundry.



This brings the Celtic army points total to 628!! Quite respectable now and certainly enough to give the local Roman Watchtower a fright!

Next on the list is either another warrior unit or some chariots.

Cry Havoc!!

The side projects continue!
3 warhound packs for the growing Celt army (now 383 points).
There remains some doubt amongst historians and therefore historical wargamers over whether Celts actually used hounds on the battlefield. I don't really care! To my mind its too cool an image to pass up, they're in the army list plus they'll be very handy for protecting and hassling flanks!
These miniatures feature my first foray away from Warlord games. The hounds and handlers to the left and right are from Crusader miniatures are excellently sculpted and fit right in! The middle hounds and handler are Warlord.

The Celt project continues! 16 slingers and a druid (the old man in the middle waving a stick about!) all dipped up!












This brings the total to a warrior unit (30), 16 slingers and a druid!
304 points in total, Rome must be trembling!

The Long and Winding Woad

I've been painting Celts today.
I thought it a good idea to get a few done and dipped to make sure its going to work before I do all 30 and realise it doesn't!
With this in mind I've speedily knocked up 5 Celt warriors.
Not unhappy with the results although the dip does seem to pool more on them than it did on the blood letters, I guess its something to do with being smaller models and the detail being closer together?
Anyway nothing a quick flick with a cotton bud couldn't fix!
25 points of Celts done, those Romans are in trouble!
